New paper calls for national database on governance and practices of institutional investors

Washington, D.C. October 3, 2011. The Committee for Economic Development (CED) and the Millstein Center at the Yale School of Management have today published a new working paper, Are Institutional Investors Part of the Problem or Part of the Solution? authored by Ben W. Heineman, Jr., Chair of CED's Corporate Governance Subcommittee and senior fellow at Harvard's schools of law and government and Stephen Davis, Executive Director of the Millstein Center. The report argues that institutional investors---pension funds, mutual funds, hedge funds, sovereign wealth funds and endowments of non-profits now have a significant impact on individuals, investee companies, the market and the economy but far too little is known about how they are governed.

Roundtable Discussion of Corporate Governance Issues at Yale

On January 19, CED joined with the Aspen Institute Business and Society Program and the Millstein Center for Corporate Governance and Performance at the Yale School of Management to host a roundtable discussion of corporate governance issues.  The half-day session in New York focused on the role of institutional investors, and brought together academic researchers and business practitioners, including CED co-chair Don Peterson, corporate governance subcommittee chair Ben Heineman, and other Trustees to discuss this key but little-examined aspect of corporate governance and performance.

CED hosted a forum on the role of institutional investors in corporate governance, with over 50 business leaders in attendance.  The forum was hosted by CED Trustee Martin Cohen, Managing Director and Corporate Secretary, Morgan Stanley, at the Morgan Stanley headquarters in New York.

CED Trustee Roger Ferguson, President and Chief Executive Officer of TIAA-CREF delivered keynote remarks on how shareholder engagement, if used properly, can lead to more efficient, effective and ultimately better run organizations from a long term perspective. Mr. Ferguson then joined a panel of corporate governance and business ethics experts, including Stephen Davis, Executive Director of the Millstein Center for Corporate Governance and Performance, Yale School of Management; CED Trustees R. Glenn Hubbard, Dean, Columbia School of Business; and William Donaldson, Former SEC Chairman, currently Chair of Donaldson Enterprises.

CED Trustee Ben Heineman, Jr. was the first speaker and outlined his work with CED on the policy brief, Restoring Trust in Corporate Governance: The Six Essential Tasks of Boards of Directors and Business Leaders. Bloomberg Television business anchor, Kathryn Hayes, served as moderator for the session, which was available on the Internet and through Bloomberg news terminals worldwide.
