SMO is an independent, nonprofit organization established in 1968. Its membership comprises corporate subscribers, among them the largest business corporations in the Netherlands. SMO is funded through the annual contributions it receives from its members, through sales revenue from its publications, and through the income from projects commissioned by both the public and private sectors.

An executive board of 25 corporate board members is responsible for the overall supervision of SMO's activities. A scientific board ensures that SMO's publications meet the required academic standards. The activities of SMO, including the design, coordination and execution of its projects are carried out by SMO's director and staff together with the help of outside experts. In carrying out its functions, SMO maintains strict independence and impartiality at all times.

SMO's purpose is to act as a forum for the free exchange of ideas in order to raise awareness and deepen understanding of current and future issues and trends. Accurate understanding of the issues provides the basis for effective policy formation which evolves with the participation of the corporate community, the government and various public and private interest groups. It is SMO's purpose to promote and bring about forms of partnership and cooperation among these parties in dealing with these issues. SMO's research comprises the monitoring of non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders within civil society, as far as they affect a company's 'licence to operate'. A daily monitoring service observing specific developments is available for individual corporate members.

CED, the Committee for Economic Development is an independent, nonpartisan organization for business and education leaders dedicated to policy research on the major economic and social issues of our time and the implementation of its recommendations by the public and private sectors.
