On November 27, CED and The Century Foundation hosted a discussion in New York City about Richard Kahlenberg's new book, Tough Liberal: Albert Shanker and the Battles Over Schools, Unions, Race, and Democracy.
As CED President Emeritus Sol Hurwitz explained at the outset, Albert Shanker, the legendary President of the American Federation of Teachers, reached out to CED in 1980. Shanker recognized that business leaders would understand the importance of investing in education. It was the first step in an unprecedented relationship between education leaders and the business community, the benefits of which continue to this day.
The discussant panel also included Eugenia Kemble, Charles Kolb, Dr. Diane Ravitch, Bella Rosenberg, and Randi Weingarten.
