Walking the Walk: A CEO Who Puts Principles to Work
Talking about the principles and ideas that will improve American business and government is important. Acting on those principles and ideas is leadership.
President and CEO of Genworth Financial, Inc. Tom McInerney is a passionate advocate for workforce development training, fiscal responsibility in our government (especially when it comes to health care and other entitlement programs) and the promotion of women in leadership roles in business.
And while he works with CED on various policy initiatives to make our nation a better place to live and work, Tom is practicing what he preaches in his role as a business leader. For example, he actively promotes and increases gender diversity on his own corporate team.
Since arriving at Genworth in 2013, Tom has significantly increased gender diversity among his own direct reports. The five women and three men on his leadership team now work with a board of directors that has increased its female representation to 25 percent during Tom’s tenure as CEO.
Tom has also mentored and encouraged talented women to seek top-level positions. CED’s Leadership in the Nation’s Interest Award was recently presented to Tom by President of Fidelity’s Personal Investing division Kathy Murphy – who sees Tom’s professional support and encouragement as having played a key role in her own outstanding career.
Tom McInerney’s dedication to walking the walk makes him more than a CEO, and more than a public policy advocate; he is a leader whose implementation of principles and ideas is changing the lives of people in his community, and beyond.
