Special Release Event: Fulfilling the Promise

On Monday, June 25, 2012, CED hosted a lunch event featuring a presentation and discussion on its report, Fulfilling the Promise: How More Women on Corporate Boards Would Make America and American Companies More Competitive.

In 2011, women occupied just 16 percent of Fortune 500 board seats, far below the percentages of women in the labor force, enrolled in higher education, and graduating with advanced degrees. CED is deeply concerned about the lack of progress in American companies and the speed at which our international competitors are proactively recruiting top talent to their boards. European and Pacific nations—and even emerging market countries—are taking action to ensure their companies have diverse corporate boards. We are falling behind. This new report reviews the latest global data on board membership, the status of U.S. companies, and introduces recommendations for improvement.

Jim Turley, CEO of Ernst & Young, delivered keynote remarks at the event which were followed by a distinguished panel including: Joanna Barsh, Director, McKinsey & Company; Gail Becker, Chair, Canada, Latin America and U.S. Western Region, Edelman; Beth Brooke, Global Vice Chair of Public Policy, Ernst & Young; and Nels Olson, Vice Chairman and Co-Leader, Board and CEO Services, Korn/Ferry International. Mr. Turley, who recently received the Go Lead Award from The White House Project, discussed the business case for greater gender diversity in business leadership on Bloomberg Television in the following video:
